Studio Meanwhile, City Blocks Urban Furniture
As part of an initiative by the Granville Island Trust and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), City Blocks were used to reimagine underused spaces on the island into vibrant public gathering spots on Granville Island. City Blocks was proud to partner with CMHC to bring new life to Chain & Forge with a suite of urban interventions designed to spark play and participation. With City Pong and an Urban Heart, the plaza stop passers by and pulls them in for a moment of play. Chain & Forge is designed for cultural programming, including concerts, markets, art installations, and community events. It’s meant to act as a bridge between the artistic legacy of Granville Island and its future as a more publicly engaging, inclusive place.
The urban heart lends its symbolic shape to an already well-loved and iconic entertainment district.
The City Pong table also welcomes and invites tourists, families and guests of Granville Island right at its entrance for a game of table tennis!
Studio Meanwhile and City Blocks has the privilege of working from the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō (Sto:lo), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, also known as Vancouver, British Columbia. While this is our local home, we recognize that our work extends into the global realm of public space and has an impact on contested, politicised lands that have been and continue to be stewarded by many different and distinct local groups. It is our intention to help elevate these spaces in respectful and honourable collaboration with those who inhabit them, to further our mission to make public space available and accessible, for all people.
