Montague Street is about to feel a little more human connection with its new glow up. This summer, City Blocks and The Brooklyn Heights Association are reclaiming space from cars and giving it back to the people! Thanks to the leadership of the Brooklyn Heights Association, the Montague Street BID, Council member Lincoln Restler, and NYC DOT, a series of smart, low-cost upgrades will bring new life to one of the neighbourhood’s main streets. Curb extensions—at corners and mid-block—will shorten crossings, calm traffic, and carve out space for what really matters: seating, greenery, and places to pause. New bike corrals will support two-wheeled travel, and revised parking and loading zones.
Studio Meanwhile and City Blocks has the privilege of working from the unceded territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Stó:lō (Sto:lo), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations, also known as Vancouver, British Columbia. While this is our local home, we recognize that our work extends into the global realm of public space and has an impact on contested, politicised lands that have been and continue to be stewarded by many different and distinct local groups. It is our intention to help elevate these spaces in respectful and honourable collaboration with those who inhabit them, to further our mission to make public space available and accessible, for all people.
